The Centre began as the effort of a biology students studying ecology at Dalhousie University. Inspired by the widespread celebration of Earth Day in 1970, they wanted to explore the possibilities of recycling and energy conservation. They solicited funds to set up a paper recycling depot, to being a study of recycling options, to spearhead a campaign for the refillable bottle, and to start researching energy questions.
